Val d'isere--espace Killy
Val d'isere and Tignes make up the ski area known as Espace Killy, one of the largest in the world. The Grand Motte in Tignes is 3600m high and has all year round , glacier ski-ing. This whole area is in the region known as Haut Tarentaise and is right on the border with Italy. Because of it's height this is one of the best places to find, virtually guaranteed snow, even when lower resorts can only offer grass. The combined area, Espace Killy [killy's World] is named in honour of Jean Claude killy--France's most successful downhill skier. I think he won 3 olympics in a row. The first downhill race of each season is held in Val, because of it's good snow record. If you are an English speaker there is an alternative ski school to the usual French ESF, called Snowfun with instructors from many countries. The nightlife here is legendary and is led by the famous Dick's Tea Bar, where I once worked. The Ski area has hundreds of lifts of all types--cable cars, gondolers, chair lifts and drags. The town of Val d'isere has it's old original quarter adjoining a large modern shopping centre, with some very smart and expensive shops. The buildings are not as monstrous as in some of the purpose built resorts. The linking town of Tignes falls into this catergory, but is over 2000m high and stands ona lake surrounded by a sunny bowl. Besides ski-ing there are facilities for paragliding, snowmobiling and various other outdoor pursuits, plus there are leasure centres for indoor sports. The ski-ing itself is exceptionally good for intermediates and experts. There are miles of motorway style pistes [runs] for the average skier, and for the more advanced there are lots of challenging reds and blacks. For experts there is an almost unlimited amount of off piste to explore, which would take years to cover. Mountain restaurants abound, though they tend to be expensive, and the food is not always highly rated by people with experience of rival establishments in places like Italy. The good thing is that the French tend to make a 2 hour stop around midday, for a long lunch. This makes the pistes quieter and is the time of day when the snow is often at it's best. Yippee. An add on for snowboarders--There is an excellent board park in Tignes, plus a half-pipe. The wide areas alongside the pistes are also excellent for boarding. All in all Espace Killy is a fabulous ski-area and a must visit for anyone who is into the sport. A bit more-- There is also loads to do in the summer-- paragliding, white water rafting, walking,[for miles/days], tennis, archery. pony riding and much more. Plus, this is absolute heaven for the keen cyclist--France's national sport |
